For the three years we were there, things were fine. If you want anything fixed, plan on waiting weeks (at least) before anyone even gets back to you unless their insurance people need to see the apartment - suddenly, they'll have maintenance in there for days making sure everything is up to speed. Also - make sure you get EVERYTHING in writing and are sure of what you're getting for your money. We got hit with what I considered to be "hidden fees" when trying to leave our lease via sublet. When I questioned it, he made it seem like we hadn't cleaned our apartment well (specifically mentioned the stove which I spent over 2 hours cleaning) even though he'd already refunded our deposit. I should also mention that we were told that our apartment would be painted before we moved it - it was never painted in the 3 years we lived there and I know that the woman who lived there before us While our experience wasn't terrible, I have friends who had AWFUL experiences renting from this landlord. You'll need to be a fairly laid-back person about "minor" fixes and repairs, but you'll need to be practically obsessive about documenting every little aspect of your stay to not get dinged when you move out. I rented from fall '09 through fall 11. ...

I lived here for a year and although I liked my apartment, the landlord is not worth dealing with. He screens all his calls and is slow to fix anything. He keeps tenants deposits for minimal things and then never fixes them, he just pockets the money. When I moved in, there was a tenant in my apartment, so I had to move half of my things up to a 3rd level apartment, only to have to move them back downstairs when the tenant came home. I also was told that the landlord doesn't like African Americans and if he'll do a "driveby" past the apartments if he has a showing to make sure their white. If they aren't, he won't stop for his showing or he just won't rent it out. Just look around at all his apartments. You'll never see a non-white person. ...

West-bound bus service is excellent for commuting to the university, but east-bound is horrible except for peak hours. John Wright is a joke of a landlord. Maintenance issues aren't addressed without multiple calls, and even then they're treated as a hassle. This winter the heat in my apartment was below 55 degrees for several weeks until I broke Wright down and he fixed the problem. I rented from summer '07 through summer '08. ...

These apartments have had some nasty reviews on other sites, but I haven't had any negative experiences here. Parking is a hassle only because there IS no parking - it's all off-street, on your own, on Gorham/Johnson/wherever you find a space. My apt building is very quiet, the heat works, the kitchen is tiny, plumbing is quaint (but functional!). ...
