Stop. Live somewhere else. Seriously. I lived here for two years with no insane issues. I had lived in other apartments managed by other companies in Harrisonburg before and never had a problem moving out. I always got my security deposit back and left on great terms. HOWEVER, not only am I not getting my security deposit back, I OWE Matchbox over $450 (in total, I owed over $700 but my security deposit is being applied for those other charges). When I lived here, rent was about $650 a month without utilities, so the total charges I owe cost more than a months rent?! And now I see rent is over $800? Don't do it. Several of my neighbors let me know they had stupid charges too when they left, such as mismatched lightbulbs and dirty baseboards. I went beyond cleaning these, installing new lightbulbs, and other odd tasks like deep cleaning the windows. I cleaned for over a full day. Aside from cleaning the carpet (which is to be carpet shampooed at the resident's charge after move out according to the lease - something that isn't a charge for any other Harrisonburg apartment I lived in), I left the apartment in good condition with minor wear and tear. Something that is totally normal after living somewhere for two years. There were minor scraps on the walls and they typical sunbleaching that occurs from leaving blinds open. This complex wanted it in "Move In Ready" as in they wanted ME to clean THEIR apartment for the next tenant. I had a massive issue with them when I need to schedule the end of my utilities. I moved out and turned in my key a week prior to my lease end date. I called and was told to end my utilities two weeks after I MOVED OUT. I confirmed this over the phone several times and they said it was after I moved out. Two days AFTER I moved out, I got an email saying I needed to keep them on 2 weeks after my LEASE DATE ended. I called again, explaining this, and they said that two weeks AFTER I MOVED OUT was plenty of time. However, when I was charged, they kept claiming it was in my lease, when it wasn't. The lease said "until lease-end date" which I did, or "until cleaning was done" which is insanely vague. After several emails after they sent me my charges TWO MONTHS AFTER I MOVED OUT BY THE WAY, they agreed to cancel the $50 fee that they charged me. That fee is still on my balance. When I moved in, I requested to know what kind of paint is used and if I could spot paint where I had bumped the walls when moving in. Note: the lease explicitly says no painting the unit without permission. My landlord (no longer with Matchbox) had a sample of paint delivered. This paint was glossy rather than flat, making my walls now super splotchy. I'm now being charged over $300 in fees to repaint the apartment, with them claiming I could have repainted it myself. Like I said, its against the lease. For a complex claiming that they lease includes all relevant information about the utilities, I kept explaining how I am not allowed to repaint according to the lease, and they keep ignoring me. Also when I moved in, I got no condition form, yet emailed my landlord some of the issues I had with the apartment. When I let the complex know this recently because they charged me for things like gross burner pans (I scrubbed the crap out of them when I moved in due to their condition, so when I left, I didn't give them much attention since what I was provided seemed good enough for "move in ready") they stopped replying to all my emails. I have sent four emails this past week asking for a follow up and they are completely ignoring me. When I call the office, they say I need to email so that they have written proof of my comments. They claim they record all called by the way. Also, the current President of Residential Services, Mary Messerley, has ignored my emails when I was a tenant there as well. Save yourself from having to pay an extra month of rent after you move out for them flip the apartment on your own dime. I had issues when moving in but racked those up to COVID issues. For me to leave the apartment in as good condition as I moved in, with wear and tear that EVERY APARTMENT EVER would deem as reasonable, to be fined that much, is insane. ...
