Renting from a man who named his building after himself, set up a "big brother" monitoring office on-site and has the social skills of a 12 year old sucks. You never know when he'll become volatile. Avoid.

Awesome place! I'm currently living at the Freund Haus and haven't had issues which is great. The reason I didn't rate the parking is because I don't have a car.

I really don't get all the hate! I lived here last school year and it was great! We had some issues with our dishwasher and Mark took care of it right away. Definitely recommend. I rented from fall 10 through summer 11.

Could not be more obvious that EVERY positive review on here was written by Freund himself. Examples: "As a man of few words, and keeping a little anonymity, I thought the best thing I could do is leave an actual exchange..." "So now that I've informed you about the unreasonable reviews you might see further down, I'll give you mine. And I'm going to tell the others I lived with to come here and write the truth." "We know to be careful not to damage anything because we don't want to have to pay for it." Like, is he serious? No human person writes that way. And hello, all the positive reviews are written in groups. Let's use our brains, people. His paltry efforts would be rather laughable, if not for the fact that even reading words he's written is chilling. I know several people who have stayed in Freund Haus, and this man is truly, truly evil. He zealously berates his tenants through constant unnecessary/nonsensical emails, frequently drops in on tenants unannounced (totally illegal), and employs an array of abuser tactics, like gaslighting, compulsive lying, and dangerous outbursts of anger. Freund also has a prolific history of SUING and otherwise cheating/taking advantage of his tenants even after they have moved out, so the terrible decision to rent with him could haunt you for the REST of your life. If you are still unconvinced, just meet with the man and pay attention to your instincts--his severe psychopathy and blatantly creepy tendencies should be readily apparent to anyone with even the most minor instinct for detecting danger. Simply put, there is something fundamentally wrong within him that speaks to a complete lack of conscience and any concept of morality. I sincerely implore you--please, PLEASE do not rent with him, and perhaps someday he will receive his LONG belated karmic due. ...

Worst landlord. After being his tenant for an entire year (2012 - 2013) it is super obvious all the positive reviews on here are written by him. He is a textbook sociopath, hellbent on abusing college aged adults and banking on their ignorance and little rental experience. When we signed our lease, he elaborated on how much his tenants love him, which should have been a huge red flag. I was not a college student when I rented from him, but he was extremely rude to me and treated me like a naive child. We had electrical issues, whenever the AC window unit was running and we turned on the microwave we would blow a fuse. When I asked him to send an electrician to the apartment (the entire apartment was on one electrical circuit, appliances and all, which is what I expressed concern over) he responded to my email with a five paragraph, bullet-pointed explanation as to why I was wrong. He said previous tenants never had any complaints. He liked to say he's "been in the business for 20 years and never had a problem"! But he sent an electrician anyway, and I asked him to inform me when he would be visiting the apartment so I could be there. He did not follow through, and instead while I was out, I received a threatening text message about how I improperly installed my AC unit and I would be responsible for any damage incurred. The AC was fine, and I responded with that statement. I told him it was illegal for him to be at my apartment without proper notice, and he responded in all caps, berating me and telling me I was the worst tenant he had ever encountered. I experienced my first panic attack as a result of renting from this man, so that's a fun fact. Oh, and I was right about the electrical problems. This incident was just the tip of the iceberg. STAY AWAY FROM THE FREUND HAUS. This place has A LOT of problems. Everything in the apartment is low-quality and breaks easily. Heating/cooling systems are cheap so monthly bills are ridiculously high. There are cameras everywhere and the landlord spends most of his time watching the recordings, looking for reasons to fine you. But really, the biggest issue I had with the place was the landlord. He's a pathetic guy who enjoys threatening people with lawsuits. Every positive review on this page was written by him. The only good thing about this place is the location. Mark Freund is the worst landlord I have ever had. I signed a lease with him last-minute and regret not reading reviews. He is a sociopath who sees students as nothing more than a paycheck and will do everything he can to charge you more than the monthly rent. Just read his lease; one of the clauses is that if you ever sue him, you have to pay his lawyer fees. According to the State of Minnesota, that is illegal. I am a Freund Haus fan. It's the best place in Dinkytown! We are moving in this fall for 2014/15. Our friends live there right now and we've been there many times this whole year. It's such a great place and we love it! We rented our apartment at Freund almost a whole year in advance because it's so hard to get in because the apartments go so fast. We are so glad we did! It's a great place to have your friends over. We know to be careful not to damage anything because we don't want to have to pay for it. I just added underground parking to my lease because of last winter and we know how much it saved some of my friends. I live in the Freund Haus with four other roommates and we love the place. The landlord is great. I heard that some people complained about things here. All I can say is that they've got to be some of the few that didn't pay their rent or who destroyed the place and didn't want to pay for the damage. We've had parties all the time but our friends don't destroy the place! We treat our apartment as if would be our parent's home! They wouldn't be happy if we damaged something. We came to America as international students from China and our parents were happy to rent this place because it was safe and very nice. The Freund Haus is really nice, in 2012/13 we wanted to live in Prague but someone grabbed first. We ended up renting Paris and it worked out great for us. Because the place is awesome, a lot of people want to live there. So if you are looking into renting an apartment at the Freund Haus, don't wait. The landlord is awesome! There's no other place in Dinkytown like the Freund Haus! It's so unique! Our apartment has two floors. Some of the bedrooms are upstairs and the living room, dinning area and kitchen are downstairs. It's great for entertaining! The landlord keeps the place very clean and in good shape. We are graduating this year (2013) and we have awesome memories of the Freund Haus. In 2013 My roommates rented an apartment at the Freund Haus while I was studying in Italy. The year before, we lived at 412 and the bedrooms were too small and crowded. When I came back I thought that the Freund Haus was going to be the same but I was wrong. This place is so spacious and very nice. Mark, the landlord takes care of the place himself, there is no caretaker like in all the other places I lived. Mark fixes everything right away. There has not been much to fix anyway. I lived in Freund for during the 13-14 school year and part of the summer. I had a great experience all around. I had a lot of friends in the building and it was so convenient to just walk down the hall to hang out with different people now and then. Our hot water ran out from time to time and we told Mark about it. He came and made an adjustment to the water heater and never had a problem again. We had heard that he was really picky about things at the end-damage-and were careful enough I guess because we all got our deposits back. I'd recommend Freund to anyone and especially if you've got a group of friends because it's a small community. I rented from fall 10 through summer 11. ...
