Probably one of the worst experiences I have ever had with an accommodation business. From the minute I signed the lease, they made it extremely difficult for me to pay (yes pay them!) the required fees to move in as I didn’t have a US bank account set up yet as I was coming over from a different country. Then from the minute I moved in, the noise was TERRIBLE. The train “that only comes once or twice a day”, clunked by 3-4 times and hour, and even throughout the night, literally shaking my headboard against the wall and knocking decorations off my desk. Dust was constantly blown from the tracks onto my balcony which made it impossible to use that extra “facility” I was paying for. The neighbors around me had no respect for people wanting to sleep and study, and were constantly banging or playing loud music at ridiculous hours - furthermore, management did nothing to sort this whatsoever. The second morning after arriving, I was welcomed to a massive pile of liquid dog poo right outside my door that took hours to be cleaned up, and there was constantly areas of dog wee and food spills in the corridors. There was a massive flood over Christmas (understanding that this was not their fault) which led to half the building being moved out to a hotel for the rest of the academic year and those of us left had to deal with construction noise, mess and workers for the rest of our stay, with absolutely no compensation at all. To top it all off, I literally scrubbed the whole room down, including the floor boards, before leaving; making sure it was even cleaner than when I moved in; only to find out that they had charged me just over $150 for two TINY areas on the wall with slight smudges - apparently they had to “repaint the whole apartment” and it cost that much??!! Very hard to believe on my part. When I questioned this, it took over 5 emails and 3 weeks to finally get a reply - no one wanting to answer me because they already had the money taken from my account so I could do nothing about it. I had friends who, despite paying a large fee for car parking in a “secure lot” had their car broken into and items stolen. After all this, I guess it’s obvious to say that I DO NOT recommend that you stay here at all!! Don’t be dragged in by all the fancy marketing and happy faces when they encourage you to sign a lease because it is only a steep downhill slope from there. I actively discouraged teammates to not stay there who were considering it because I couldn’t bear for anyone else to have to go through what I did. Considering the extreme cost of these apartments, I would have been happier living in a college dorm or tent to be honest! Both of which are significantly cheaper! ...

Do not book and be drawn in by all the glittering advertising! It is not at all like they say it will be. For any parent , finding your child a safe and comfortable place to stay whilst they are at college is important, but even more when they are moving halfway across the work and studying a full time degree alongside being a 3-season D1 athlete. Initially we were impressed by Lumen’s response and features. They hassle you every day to book and sign the contract but BEWARE once you sign it becomes a different story. We had asked months in advance to move in early as my daughter had to attend pre season camp but upon arrival in the USA the room wasn’t ready and we had to find somewhere else to stay last minute for multiple days. Then when we finally got in the “cleaning” that had delayed the move in was completely inadequate - there was grease all over the kitchen, limescale in the bathroom and 2 dead cockroaches! Additionally if you need to pay from an international card/account - be prepared for extremely high convenience charges and no help at all from staff. Having only been at Lumen 2 weeks, my daughter is already wanting to move and the added stresses on top of her already intense schedule is harming physical and mental health. The person above is constantly banging loudly and in the early hours of the morning but the staff say they won’t do anything about it as it’s just “normal noise”! The trains are TERRIBLE - shaking the headboard against the wall every night waking her up and the inability to study as they pass by multiple times an hour for minutes at a time. There is dog poo everywhere and the facilities are often unstocked or dirty. When she asked to move they stated it would be 75% of the rent ($1200) to re-let the apartment despite it not being her fault at all - something that is almost impossible for a student unless you want to have no money left for food and other living expenses! This is just a money making process on their behalf as they probably know that many people will want to leave because of the inadequacy of the accomodation so they can rack up income! She continually asked for a lease termination, even though we have paid a month in advance already that we aren’t asking back and they won’t comply. This is making my daughter very upset and stressed about the future several months and how she will cope during finals and in competition season. ...
