I have never had problems renting during the past five years in Lawrence, until now. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so let me begin……
1. Upon moving in, we discovered one room of the two bedroom townhome to be completely unlivable as the carpet was covered in cat urine. It took three weeks of meetings, relentless phone calls to the office, and finally, a threat to call the health department before they replaced the carpet. However, they refused to replace the pads so the room still smells.
2. A month after moving in the seal on our door broke and the office “failed to receive” our countless phone calls to fix it. We had to deal with a draft of cold air until February until I caught the maintenance man outside on break (the only competent person in the company). He fixed it that day (and our gas bill went down dramatically).
3. Major water damage everywhere. One time, part of our ceiling came down. They fixed the leak, but the ceiling remains yet to be intact.
4. We had mice.
5. Finally, they towed my roommate’s car, blamed the police (who according to Lawrence law and in an official statement claimed they would never tow a car on private property) for expired tags – a situation we explained to the office when signing the lease. They refused to pay us back (at first), claimed they didn’t know it was our car since our file didn’t have all the needed paper work (or the form where we registered our vehicles was lost), admitted they didn’t know how we had a lease since they couldn’t find our applications (leading me to believe there is no filing system in the office), and upon reimbursing us after we took out a law suit, threatened to keep our deposit.
In conclusion, you get what you pay for…… and less. IF you can handle pests, repairs, and complete incompetence from your leasing staff…. This is the perfect place. If you would prefer the assurance of leasing property from functioning human beings…..LIVE ELSEWHERE.
I rented from fall '07 through spring '08.
