Great location. walking distance of the Baker Wetlands. Right near Walmart and target and a ton of restaurants. The staff are awful and maintenance is worse. The new updates to the insides are great. Very nice countertops and sinks. Nice floors.

There is a variety of options in terms of affordability and levels of quality. The facility has a pool and covered parking. Maintenance can take a while to get to the task sometimes. The Connection is located very close to Target, Wal-Mart, Aldi, and several restaurants! ...

I stayed here for a year, and the overall experience wasn't bad, aside from some cleanliness and maintenance issues (My room smelled like cat urine and the dishwasher barely worked). However, the unethical business practice of overcharging in an effort to make sure you don't get your security deposit back, unfortunately, is present here and has soured my opinion of The Connection. For example, when you move in you are given a card that allows you to enter through the front gates. Mine didn't work from the start, but I quickly came to learn that the complex doesn't actually close the gates, it is all to give a false sense of security. Every resident simply enters through the exit gates located on both sides. I forgot to include the broken card in my move-out packet, causing them to charge me $75.00 (for reference, the exact same card costs $3.18 on Amazon), when I offered to return the card I was told "sorry it should have been included with the move-out packet" I'm not saying you shouldn't live at The Connection, it's an incredibly average complex, however, I highly recommend you find either: A.) Somewhere that treats you equally as bad, at a better price. or B.) Somewhere nicer, at a higher price. If you like the location, check out The Nest (more expensive, but nicer) or The Reserve (cheaper, but same value) ...

Besides the constant trash and dog poop on the grounds of the Connection at Lawrence, the actual living experience isn't that bad. There is however a huge spider problem in the outdoor stairwells, so much so that during warmer months I would recommend bringing something to hit the strands out of the way while you go up or down the steps. There were also always spider egg sacs clinging to the stairwell walls too, these were there all year round. Dormant eggs or not, they're not exactly what I like to see first thing when I come home for the day. I can't completely blame the Connection for the trash and dog poop all over the grounds as the vast majority of it comes from the other residents, but very rarely did I see a trashcan in the public areas that was not overflowing. A little more upkeep on the grounds would be nice. The landscaping itself was however very nice as landscapers come pretty frequently to plant new flowers and lay down fresh mulch. The staff that works in the office try their best but a lot of times they wouldn't know the answer to more in-depth questions about rent or leasing when asked. My friends that also live in the complex have told me they've had worse experiences with the office staff, but I haven't seen it first hand. The noise levels are pretty manageable. I was only ever woken up a couple of times at night because of drunken yelling in the parking lots and residents with chipped mufflers and blaring music. This is to be expected at an apartment complex in a college town though. BUT, when it comes to moving out they will charge you as much as they possibly can to keep your security deposit. On my security deposit statement, they charged me thirty whole dollars to "clean [my] bedroom door"? How could they possibly spend $30 cleaning a door that wasn't dirty? I had already greased the hinges and everything myself so I have no clue why they could possibly be charging me that much. This was just ONE thing on my security deposit statement that didn't make sense though. They also charged me for an entirely new paint job in the kitchen, which was already covered in dirt and grease stains when my roommates and I moved in. I mean for God's sake there was grease on the ceiling and light fixtures in the kitchen when we moved in! Needless to say, we left it better than it was when we got the apartment and still lost our whole security deposit and then some. Was this because of a miscommunication when changing over the management (which happened while I was leasing from them) or did they simply forget how horrid of a state it was two years ago? It will remain a mystery! The icing on the cake is that when I went to officially move out and give the office back my keys, they told me that since I turned them in the afternoon on my moveout date I either had to pay a late fee of two months worth of rent OR I could "lose them" and pay $180 on my security deposit later. Now mind you, I was never told that keys had to be turned in before noon on the moveout day so I assumed any time during office hours would have been fine. The people in the office *actually* suggested that I throw the keys in the trash rather than pay two months of rent! My lease ended on the 31st of July, 2020 so if you are reading things far later than then, hopefully, some of these issues have been fixed. For your sake when moving out, I hope so. TL;DR: They will squeeze every penny out of the security deposit that you give them so they can keep it all. (Literally every penny. The amount I owe after factoring in the deposit is $225.01 exactly.) P.S. Fun fact! The gates only ever close during showing times and have never once worked properly! This does not count as a gated community, and don't let them convince you otherwise! I rented from fall 2018 through summer 2020. ...
